  • Formerly owned by Renault F1 Sporting Director and noted Ferrari collector Jean Sage
  • Eligible for historic races including the Goodwood Revival’s St Mary’s Trophy
  • A worthy contender for Mille Miglia entry, or in Index of Performance classification at Tour Auto and Modena Cento Ore

The Giulietta powered Alfa Romeo’s economic recovery in the post-war period, modernising the range and underscoring the move towards full series production. Launched in 1957, the hotter Giulietta T.I.—or Turismo Internazionale—added increased compression and a twin-choke downdraught carburettor to the already potent 1,290-cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine. An additional 12 horsepower was the result, which enabled the attractive three-box saloon to hit a top speed of 154 km/h, astounding the gathered motoring press when it was first demonstrated at Monza.

This smartly finished example left Alfa Romeo’s Portello works on 16 December 1957 as one of just 1,268 built during the first year of T.I. production, and was delivered to Forlì, Italy on 28 December. Always popular with enthusiastic drivers, the Giulietta T.I. Berlina quickly made a name for itself in motorsport—a reputation that stayed with the model throughout its life. This particular car would eventually be prepared for historic racing in the 1990s and competed at tracks the length and breadth of Europe, from Vallelunga and Zandvoort to Donington Park. In 2000, the Alfa Romeo passed into the ownership of noted Swiss Alfa authority Conrad Waser, before being sold to former Renault F1 Sporting Director Jean Sage four years later. Sage immediately set to work improving the Giulietta, and while in his care the car was subject to more than €15,000 worth of improvements by marque specialist Autofficina Omega, including rebuilds of both the engine and gearbox. Invoices for work carried out are available to view on file, alongside older-style FIA and FFSA papers.

Well-presented and with previous competition history, this racy Alfa Romeo Giulietta T.I. Berlina would make a characterful and affordable entry to any number of historic race series for which it is eligible including the ever-popular St Mary’s Trophy at the Goodwood Revival—a similar car having been driven in the 2023 event by Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button. The car would be similarly suited for Mille Miglia entry or for Index of Performance classification at events including the Tour Auto and Modena Cento Ore.
