Description:
West Surrey Racing RT35 driven by Jordi Gené alongside Rubens Barichello, who would win the 1991 British F3 Championship

BARC Speed Championship Class winning car now running 294bhp.
Ron Tauranac was the designer behind the Formula 1 World Championship winning Brabham Grand Prix cars of the 1960’s. Ron himself competed in hillclimbs during the 1950s where a fellow competitor and later friend was Jack Brabham. In 1959, Ron accepted Jack’s invitation to join him in England to set up Motor Racing Developments and began the long run of very successful works and customer cars. Numerous race wins were taken in F1, F2 and F3 with both Jack Brabham and Denny Hulme winning the World Drivers Championship and Brabham taking the Constructors Cup.
After a period working for Frank Williams, which included designing the Trojan F1 and F5000 cars, In 1974, Tauranac set up the Ralt factory at Woking in Surrey and in 1975 the first Ralt, the RT1, was produced. 1979 saw ground-effect arrive in F3 and. In 1980, the RT3 was born and would soon become one of the most successful F3 designs ever, being totally dominant for a number of years and famously driven by Ayrton Senna to win the Marlboro British F3 Championship in his West Surrey Racing RT3/83. The RT30 was introduced for the flat-bottom rules coming into effect in 1985 and the RT32 would follow, with an introduced Honeycomb/carbon tub structure. The RT35 was the final development of the RT32 philosophy and was the last Formula Three car that Ron Tauranac designed for Ralt of his own volition before Ralt would become March Cars Ltd. Just 56 RT35’s were produced.
On offer at Klasio, this particular example, chassis 900 was purchased by West Surrey Racing, who sent their mechanics to Ralt to assemble the car with a Mugen F3 engine for the 1991 season.
West Surrey Racing ran Jordi Gené in chassis 900 alongside Rubens Barrichelo who would go on to win the championship. In a sister car, Gené achieved 7 podiums, 2 fastest laps and 4th place in the championship. Chassis 900 achieved 2nd place at the Marlborough Masters F3 Zandvoort, and at the Macau Grand Prix, Gené won the first leg with Coulthard in 2nd (also in an RT35). In the second leg, Gené was 2nd to Coulthard but lost the overall win on aggregate times. Chassis 900 was run again by WSR but at this time in Casio colours rather than the Marlborough colours which featured in Britain and Zandvoort and achieved the win (and fastest lap) at the Fuji F3 Cup, which would be its final race of the 1991 season.
Unusually, the car was retained by West Surrey Racing as a showcar. In 1996/1997, they moved to British Touring cars and so the car was stored for a further 7 years until it was offered to the current owner by WSR themselves and subsequently purchased as a rolling chassis in 2004.
Between 2004 and 2012, Chassis 900 was subject to a complete ‘nut and NAS bolt’ rebuilt, alongside the fitting of a 2-litre XE engine, where it would go on to achieve multiple class wins in various speed events. Under development, the car achieved, 5th, 4th, 3rd and 2nd fastest time of the day, before finally winning the class championship in the BARC Speed Championship in 2018. 2019 was the last competitive year for the car before COVID and a broken hip in 2022.
