1979 FIA BMW E21 Group 5 Replica

Description:

Motorsport Showroom are delighted to offer to the market, on behalf of its owner, this very special FIA BMW ‘Group 5’ E21 that has been expertly built to replicate the original Harald Ertl 1978 DRM Championship winner.

In order to prepare properly for the task in hand, Quick Motors in Belgium completed the long and complex process of carefully restoring the original DRM Winner ‘E21-R1-26’ and returning it, as close as possible, to the specification and condition in which it competed in period.

Using the skills, knowledge and experience gained from restoring the original car, work commenced on building this very car (E21-QM-01) to the highest of standards with every detail reflecting the original. The company’s skill level and obvious regard for accuracy, combined with having the original car side by side, were factors in the FIA granting HTP papers as soon as the build was finished.

Naturally, to meet modern day safety standards, small changes to the original were incorporated including the fuel system and the roll cage as the original cage was aluminium. The engine was built using new parts including freshly cast cylinder heads strengthened in places in order to avoid the failures often experienced in period.

The specification is impressive and includes:

Safety:

·        Bolt-in, period-correct, FIA roll-cage

·        Merin 100-litre, FIA-approved, fuel cell

·        Recaro ‘pole position’seat

·        6-point harness

·        16-inch front wheels

·        18-inch rear wheels

·        Bilstein shock absorbers

·        AP Racing 1979-spec brake callipers

Drivetrain etc:

·        20-4 turbo or M12 engine

·        KKK Turbo charger (20-4)

·        High performance intercooler (20-4)

·        5-speed, dog-leg gearbox

·        Full locked differential

Further information on the cars specification can be provided upon request.

‘E21-QM-01’ was completed in July 2022 and the car was finished off in the distinctive, red, yellow, blue and white Würth and Rodenstock livery. In the following months, it was thoroughly tested and has enjoyed outings at prestigious events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and this year it was raced at the AVD Old Timer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring with the Audi Factory driver, Fran Stippler, at the wheel along with Erik Qvick.

With its FIA paperwork in hand, the car is eligible for a variety of high-profile events including Tourenwagen Classics, DTM Classics and Peter Auto events. This is an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire a superbly built, safe and competitive, period perfect re-creation of the car that made its mark in European Saloon Car racing in the late 1970s and was an important part of BMW and motor sport’s history. Unsurprisingly, four other cars are scheduled to be built with final liveries chosen by the buyer, but this one is ready to go with the benefit of having been campaigned and tested recently.

We welcome and encourage your earliest enquiry to find out more about this very special BMW.
