Alfa Romeo Guilietta SZ Coda Tonda
Description:
1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ (Sprint Zagato) Coda Tonda
Concours quality restored and race prepped with full FIA HTP papers.
Formerly part of Alfaholics family collection and put through a seven year sympathetic full restoration.
As much of the original aluminium body as possible was retained during restoration - roof, pillars, front scuttle, top halves of front wings, rear bodywork & bonnet are all original repaired items. Additionally, all the Zagato manufactured screen surrounds, aluminium finishers, side window frames & internal screen cappings were all polished and re-used.
Currently fitted with a 1600 twin cam race/fast road engine with following spec :- steel crank, steel rods, forged lightweight high compression pistons, high capacity oil pump, Veloce engine sump set, Windage tray, race valve gear, Billet rifle drilled cams, 45mm Weber carbs, lightweight steel flywheel and road/rally cerametallic clutch. The original engine, gearbox & diff all come as part of the sale.
Early known history indicates this car was prepared by the team under Virgilio Conrero and driven by Corsican driver Pierre Orsini. There is a collection of period photographs showing participation from 1961-63 in various European rallies of the day including Le Tour de France, Coupe del Alpes, Criterium Jean Behra and Criterium Alpin with Orsini at the wheel. There is also a small collection of race history memorabilia.
Since restoration the car has tested at Castle Combe and competed at the Silverstone Classic in 2017 - beating the SZ lap record by 4 seconds.
The car has covered approx 100 miles only since restoration.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ (for 'Sprint Zagato') officially named the Tipo 101.26, or “Type 101.26”, was an aluminium-bodied 2-seater Berlinetta built by Zagato for competition use. Based on the chassis and mechanicals of the Sprint Speciale it's entirely hand built in aluminium with plexiglass windows, making it light and fast but also expensive. Two hundred and seventeen were built - the original design being with a rounded rear called the “Coda Tonda” (round tail). The last thirty or so received the longer kamm-style rear end in addition to front disc brakes, which is referred to as the “Coda Tronca” (truncated tail). The first examples were built in December 1959 with production continuing into 1962.
A high quality example of a very versatile road/race car with current FIA HTP papers and a welcome participant at any number of national & international events.
