Description:
Built in 1982 this 50-series Formula Ford 1600 was one of the first from Crosslé to feature pull-rod inboard suspension, radiator behind the driver and a new ‘look’ from its ultra-successful 30 and 40 series predecessors. Straightforward to drive and robust in construction, these cars were popular with race schools in Europe and the USA.
Although considered a 1982 model, Dennis Firestone in fact gave the 50F its debut in October 1981 at the SCCA Runoffs at Road Atlanta in the USA, finishing second and 0.4s behind the eventual winner after leading a field of 37 cars until what he believed to be the final lap...
Other US drivers included John Andretti and John Paul Junior, while in the UK Richard Peacock, Niki Phillips, Paul Bishop, Peter McAleer and others won many races. Eddie Irvine took his first podium finish in a 50F.
This is 50F-82-18, delivered via Richard Peacock in April 1982 in white bodywork. Scrutiny stickers and harness suggest that the car last raced in 1999, dry-stored since then in a private collection and ready for restoration.
The car is offered for sale as shown, without period Hewland Mk9 gearbox and engine, otherwise mostly complete and in good condition apart from dust and superficial corrosion. GRP bodywork is incomplete but easily replaced. Operating today from the same factory where this car was designed and built, Crosslé Car Company can provide new bodywork and anything else this 50F needs.
Several European countries have excellent Kent Formula Ford 1600 series in which this car would be welcome and competitive from 2024. This is a straightforward and affordable winter project which we can deliver anywhere, and within Europe at modest cost.
