Porsche revived the Carrera name for its luxuriously equipped, top-of-the-range 911 in 1973. Designated 'Carrera RS' (RennSport), the newcomer was intended as a limited-edition product for Group 4 GT racing, a class that required a minimum of 500 built. However, the resulting demand for this fabulous car proved so great that the production run was later progressively extended, ending up at 1,590 units. Based on a lightened 911S platform, the Carrera RS featured revised suspension and wider rear wheels (beneath flared 'arches) for improved handling, while the 2.7-litre, fuel-injected, air-cooled six-cylinder engine's 210bhp boosted top speed to around 150mph. Not merely a styling gimmick, the Carrera's trademark 'duck's tail' spoiler made a vital contribution to high-speed stability, a virtue of increasing importance as power outputs continued to rise. Based on the lightweight 911 Carrera RS announced the previous year, Porsche's RSR GT-category racer collected overall wins in the World Sportscar Championship at Daytona and the Targa Florio in 1973, defeating 3-litre prototypes from Ferrari, Matra and Mirage-Ford in the process, an outstanding achievement for a production-based car. Rare and highly sought after, original RS and RSR models cost a small fortune, a state of affairs that has inspired many a Porsche enthusiast to create replicas of what was one of the defining sports cars of its era. A 1977 model (3.0-litre SC) first registered on 8th October 1976, this 911 was comprehensively rebuilt and upgraded to 1974 RSR specification in 2011. From 2012 to 2014, this car competed in the Belgian Historic Cup and in 2014 won the Belgian Championship.

The RSR conversion involved fitting a 3.0-litre engine, built around a Type 930/10 crankcase, which features Bosch slide-valve induction and produces 325bhp. Other noteworthy features include a Type 915 five-speed gearbox; Porsche 917-type Turbo brakes; Bilstein suspension; and glassfibre RSR-style additions to the original bodywork, German Fahrzeugbrief and Royal Automobile Club de Belgique Passeport Technique d'Épreuve. Carbon doors, hood and roof
