Lotus Ford Escort Twin Cam MK I
Description:
Lotus Ford Twin Cam is a four-cylinder gasoline engine developed by Lotus for the 1962 Lotus Elan.
The very early engines were equipped with 1.5 liters, but the majority were developed with 1.6 liters. It used a Ford 116 E-iron cylinder block and a new aluminum cylinder head with two overhead camshafts. The Twin Cam engine was used in various vehicles until Lotus stopped production in 1973.
Ford set itself the goal of producing a sporty version of one of its models. The first was the Ford Escort, which was equipped with a twin-cam 1558 cc engine, from the Lotus Cortina. This meant 110 horsepower and a top speed of 115 mph. A reinforced body with wider wheel arches and harder shocks optimized with front disc brakes.
The Escort Twin-Cam was designed and developed in 1967 by Ford's competition department based in Boreham. Ford entered the rallycross event for the first time with the escort. Result? The Escort Twin Cam won 4 races. This was just the beginning of a very successful career. The Ford factory team was virtually unbeatable in the late 1960s and 1970s.
Altogether only 883 Ford Escort Twin Cams MK I were built. These cars were produced as "Type 49" in limited quantities and all chassis numbers start with 49. The "49" was officially called Escort TC or Twin Cam and was put together in a small corner of Ford's Halewood. The main customers of Ford were motor racing teams.
Research indicates that between 1969/1970 this car was sold to the American racing driver John Buffum, who led a team called Libra Racing.
In 1972, the vehicle participated in the Trans-Am series, mainly in Florida
Between 1983 and 1987 the car drove with driver Raymond Bridges in the Bahamas. At this time, it received the hand-painted paint that has been preserved to this day.
After another stop in Florida, this escort was sold in 2006 to Germany.
The current owner, a German enthusiast, has completely rebuilt the car. This restoration was completed in 2010 and was purely mechanical. Care was taken to preserve the history of hand-painted numbers and names from his Bahamian period.
This Ford Escort is delivered with its FIA papers, which would have to be renewed after the expiry date. The vehicle is immediately ready for use and for various events such as "Tour Auto".
