ALDON AL3 SPORTS RACING CAR
Very reluctantly due to health issues I am having to offer for sale my original and unique ALDON Sports Racing Car.
The ALDON was originally built and designed by myself and Don Loughlin as one of the first monocoque chassis racing cars of the late 60’s early 70’s. It was designed to take a variety of engines that could be used in various formulae.
We built it first for the initial F100 Sports cars series using a BMC 1300 engine racing against the likes of the legendary
Tom Pryce in the works Royale. It was also part of the F100 team that competed in the Thruxton 6hr relay along with Mark Cole(Eurosport and Hot Car Editor) ,Lyndon “Taffy” Thorne and John Calvert, The team came 2nd overall only lap down after 6 hours and 509 miles racing. The Aldon shared by Alan and Lyndon doing 350 miles faultlessly!
Lyndon then purchased the car and converted it to a Gp5 car with a 1300 Cosworth FVA engine and raced in the 1972/3 Motoring News/Esso championship winning the 1300 class and 2nd overall both years.
It was then purchased by the Hart brothers John and Gregg and raced very successfully in the 1980’s HSCC championships winning 5 of it’s 6 races.
Marcus Pye former editor of Autosport purchased it off the Harts and took it to the USA and with driver Phil Meany it competed at Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen and Virginia raceway winning the SCCA 1600cc class and many other races.
They wanted to put it into the 2 litre class due to disgruntled Lotus 23 ,Merlyn and Elva drivers!
I bought it back from the USA in 2008 with the winning 1600 Lotus T/C engine and converted it to run in the HSA and Midland Hillclimb Championship being very successful with
2nd overall and class winner in the 2010 MHC and
FTD at Prescott Classic meeting.
2nd FTD Shelsley Classic Meeting
Class record Shelsley Walsh 30.05
Class Record Loton Park 55.18
Class record Curborough 33.00 ? not sure of exact time
And numerous class and overall awards.
The car is perfectly suited for circuit racing ,sprints and hillclimbs
Spec of the car includes
Monocoque Chassis with side pods that take bag tanks but has a small alloy tank inserted at the moment for the hills
Fibreglass body (Original moulds included}
Short Stroke all steel 1600 cc Lotus T/C engine built by a leading USA engine specialist.
Steel billet crank
Steel billet camshafts
Carillo rods
Custom forged pistons
We have dyno figures from the States of 200 bhp @ 7700 rpm and peak torque of 141.2 @ 6800 rpm
But to be honest we have only seen 175/180 on our dyno! Still good though
The engine has been completely reliable over the years I have had it with only a couple of freshen ups required .and is very easy to drive up to 9000rpm with no flat spots or black holes.
Twin plate racing clutch
2 x 45 DCOE Webers
Electronic ignition
Hewland Mk 8 4/5 speed box (rebuilt by JP racing at Silverstone few years ago
LSD(also rebuilt by JP)
Koni Alloy fully adjustable dampers-rebuilt by Koni
8 x 13 and 10 x 13 split rims with spare set of wheels and tyres
Solid spline hardy drive shafts
Avon classic pattern tyre
Willans in date harness
Stack play back Tacho

The car is all ready to go but needs a bit of TLC as it has only done a few events in the last 3 yeas with none this year.
The chassis will easily take an 1800 BDG and FT200 g/box to upgrade
