Toyota first announced plans to participate in Formula 1 in January 1999 and made its debut in 2002. The new Formula 1 team grew from the Japanese manufacturer's established Toyota Motorsport GmbH organisation, based in Germany. Designed by Pascal Vasselon, the Panasonic-sponsored Toyota TF108 made its racing debut at the first round of the 2008 season, held in Australia. The team's drivers were the Italian Jarno Trulli and German Timo Glock, both of whom would consistently finish in points-scoring positions, including podiums in France and Hungary. Toyota finished 2008 with 56 points, a vast improvement on their 2007 total of 13. The team finished the year ranked 5th, improving on their 2007 standing of 6th.
