Information Sheet

McKee mk8 F5000 race car

History:

The car is the “Mat Kron” F5000 MK8 McKee. Its picture is on the cover of the book “Formula 5000 the a-z” by Bernard Cowdrey.

It is clearly acknowledged as this by the McKee owners club in USA and by the “old race cars” website. Paul Dudiac who I have visited in the USA runs the club.

The car came 3rd in the very first F5000 race in the USA. It crashed however in its third race and was rebuilt with the first of the upgraded Mk 12 body. It ran the old mk8 hubs up until I upgraded them to a new batch of mk12 hubs that were made for McKee club car owners. At the same time a local race car engineer/designer upgraded the trailing arms from s/steel to chrome moly. Original parts kept. He was amazed by the build quality of the car and materials used.

I was given a copy of the engineering drawings of the car by Bob McKee himself whom I visited on a holiday once. This chassis (before crash rebuild by Bob) by exhibited by the American Society of Engineers showing of its use of highly exotic metals (supplied free to Bob from a sponsor - Armco). There is an engineering paper that was published on this use of exotic metal in Bob McKee’s cars.

The original car was managed/owned by the son of the owner of a big beer company (Schlitz) and the owners father forbid the son to drive the car. Both the father and son died later that year and the fixed car sat unused in the estate for many years.

The car was restored in 1989 and bought by brother collector of cars, the Way family (Lyn and Al) They sold me the McKee first and then the Chevron couple of years later (only because they discovered AL had limes disease). They also own the famous McKee Can am car which was the first to have turbos (Porsche is acknowledged to have copied this from that car). They never raced the F5000 car as it was like a new car. They displayed it at a concours event once. They also owned a Mk12 McKee they raced.

So when I got it was like a new car and had only been raced maybe 4 times in its life before being restored in 1989. Not used again until I purchased in 2009.

I have raced the car in approximately 5 race meetings over last few years (as per log book).

The car has Australian COD.

2) acquired new engine from USA race shop (Precision)
3) Gearbox near new but has renewed dogs.
4) new cv’s in drive shafts
5) all new rear uprights and bearings
6) period mechanical tacho to suit magneto which has been rebuilt.
7) proper set up by local respected race engineers.

8) new springs and fuel supply setup
9) new oil tank & plumbing as original got surge on old engine

10) fire system upgraded.

Other specifications:

Chassis – tube frame with riveted panels for stiffness. Magnesium bulkhead. Various exotic metals used and no signs of any corrosion. Straight. Powder coated.

Steering – original rack

Suspension – 1968 dated rebuilt original Koni aluminium shocks. Near new replacement springs. Updated rear uprights from Mk8 to mk12 and upgraded rear trailing arms. Original parts supplied.

Cockpit – original instruments except tacho which was upgraded from period “Sun” device to period cable drive unit. Original leather race seat over aluminium tub. Recent belts and fire device. Fits 103kg 6ft 3 driver.

Spark – vertex magneto (rebuilt)

Spoiler – one of the first rear spoilers that is designed to flatten out with speed – as per local race engineer.

Gearbox – original LG600 with very limited usage. Dogs replaced recently. Handles modern power much better than DG300 box.

Wheels – original American racing magnesium wheels

Brakes – original 4 pot Kelsey Hayes brakes, Porterfield race pads. Original ventilated disks all round. Work much better than later F5000 with smaller 13 inch front wheels.

Engine – All new CNC ported Brodix heads, roller rockers, new race block, etc. 450hp at wheels on dyno but sucks in air cleaners. Big torque which is OK because it runs the LG600 gearbox. Would produce more top end hp with bigger (non-original style) headers and 51 Webers. Not really needed. Has approx. 15 hours usage from new.
