Jaguar XK120 Roadster

Ad Now

The XK120 itself was almost certainly never intended to be a volume production model car. At the time of the introduction of the XK 120, Jaguar had an engine which was the newly developed 6 cylinder XK unit, but the MkVII saloon for which it was intended was not ready until 1950.
As this was the post-war period Jaguar badly needed to stir up some excitement, as its range was still of pre-war design. Hence the XK Open Two Seater Super Sports as it was then known was designed as a “show car” for the 1948 Motor Show.
It utilized a shortened version of the chassis designed for the MK VII, which was already in use in the post war MK V, and the brand new XK engine, the result of all the research done during the war, while Jaguar could not produce any cars.
It made extensive use of aluminum for the body panels, and William Lyons had plans to market it as a fairly low volume Sports car. Its purpose was to maintain public interest until the introduction of the MK VII, and act as a test bed for the new engine.
The rest is now history, the car was a sensation and orders so overwhelmed the production capability that it needed to be redesigned to be build at a production line.
Together with the roadster, the XK120 was also available as a Drophead Coupe and a Fixed Head Coupe.
All of the XK 120 s were fitted with a 3442cc 6 cylinder engine which produced 160 horsepower at 5000rpm but because of modern technology it is now possible to achieve closer to 300BHP for those wishing to race these cars. Because of it’s relatively large engine, the XK Jaguar is a superb car to drive and the torque is such that it will pull from low revs in top gear. It is a car which can be driven in city traffic  but it is also a fantastic car to use for long continental trips.
The car that we are privileged to offer is an original UK supplied motor car, one of only 1176 produced in RHD against over 6000 LHD models, as at the time of production, Jaguars main market was the USA.. It comes with a good history file which includes both buff and green log books together with invoices and correspondence between previous owners. It has been the subject of a chassis up restoration, prior to which it had been off of the road since the mid 70's. It now only needs to be viewed to be appreciated.  The paint work and general attention to detail is superb and the standard of trimming is beyond criticism. It is a joy to drive and will undoubtedly provide a new owner with hours of satisfaction. We consider that the car is very realistically priced for one in this condition at £115,000
