Description:

Here I have for sale my mk 1 golf which I bought from Ireland in first lockdown. I have only driven to get daytime mot and put 4 road going tyres on it. The chap I bought it off was a engineer and very particular, I will list below the info he sent me about the car which he owned and raced for about 10 years. Peter was in his mid sixties so car has been well looked after and not raced hard. Any questions please feel free to message me and I'll get back to you as soon as

Here’s the spec of the engine and box in the car....

Starting with a 1.8 short block (220mm deck height to stay within regs) bored to 83mm with Audi A3 pistons. Golf turbo rods, stronger than standard, good for 270 ft.lbs of torque, with ARP big end bolts. Diesel crank, 95.5mm stroke, giving 2067cc. Material has to be ground from the inside of the block to clear the long stroke crank, it’s a tight fit!! All balanced, and I would use a 7000 rpm limit most of the time because of the stroke. Higher volume 16v oil pump. Ignition is controlled by Megajolt. (Programmable). 45 DCOE Weber’s as you know. 4 into 1 race exhaust manifold, 2.5” twin box exhaust. (easily passes track noise tests)

Head is 1.8 GTi, with 40mm inlet valves, and ported. Currently has a 272 deg cam, my plan was to go to a 290 deg cam, as it’s not a high revving engine anyway, and so retain a lot of mid range torque, which is better with the ratios in the gearbox, even though they are the closer ratio GTi gears. Currently has two stacked head gaskets to drop compression to 10.8 for the 272 deg cam, (works for the turbo guys, so no problem for a NA engine!) Once run in I was going to go to a 290+ deg cam, and single head gasket, which raises compression ratio to 12.1.

Flywheel and pressure plate are balanced and lightened, paddle clutch.

Gearbox is GTi gears with 4.25:1 final drive, Quaife LSD, ARP crown wheel bolts. Larger 100mm inner CV joints. Drive shafts are Scirocco, (don’t fit shafts from 90mm joints, they fit, but are slightly longer and will smash the inner joint!! You don’t need to ask how I found that one out....)

Brakes are 256mm front, with Vauxhall callipers (larger pistons than VW), rear is converted to Mk2 discs, Scirocco handbrake cables. Bias pedal box, but pedal was too heavy, so front brakes have a remote servo, big difference! Stainless braided flexibles.

Suspension is Leda fronts, only one event on them since being overhauled, new pistons, and valved for track use by Gaz. Rear are Koni, top adjustable. Springs 350 front, 500 rear. Could go to 600 rear but I wasn’t brave enough! However, you’re more likely to go softer for any sort of road use. Uprated front and rear anti roll bars, lower front strut brace.

Race polybushes pretty much everywhere.

Fuel cell has anti siphon vent to keep fuel in the cell in case of a roll. Fire extinguisher plumbed to engine bay and driver. Trembler (I think that’s what it’s called) switch cuts off power to fuel pump in an accident or roll. (I was a power station engineer, safety was always to the fore!)
