Coventry Climax FWB engine to FIA race spec
Coventry Climax FWB 1470cc Engine, full professional rebuild to FIA race legal specification.
Block - Late FWB block (with side bulges). Gallery plugs removed and chemically cleaned throughout. Topped and tailed to ensure flat/level faces. New jackshaft bearings. Interference fit liners bored and plateau honed to 76.5mm bore (giving 1470cc). Forged bearing caps and steel strap to centre main. 3mm steel stiffener plate/windage tray at block skirt. New oil filler/ breather tower.
Crank – Billet steel made by Phoenix cranks. Reground and polished to middle limits. Rear lip seal conversion. New spigot bearing for gearbox input shaft. Balanced by Swaymar.
Conrods – FWB forged steel, stress relieved and polished. New small end bushes. New grade 14.9 big end bolts. Balanced end to end to 1 gram.
Pistons – New pressure forged small dish 76.5 bore 3 ring with new rings, pins and clips. Balanced to 1 gram.
All new mains, big ends and thrust bearings.
Head – Professionally gas flowed. New lead free valve seat inserts with 3 angle seats. New valve guides. New reshaped inlet valves and exhaust valves. New springs, lightened spring caps and cotters. CR set to 10.4 : 1 Head gasket and manifold gaskets in solid reusable copper.
New Kent Camshaft to FIA legal specification (Lotus stage 2). Refaced cam followers. New cam bearings.
New steel jackshaft drive gear on lightened jackshaft with bronze drive dog to distributor/oil pump shaft.
New timing chain with restricted tensioner movement.
Remanufactured high capacity oil pump with large pickup filter in fully baffled sump.
New billet ally bottom pulley and new front seal.
New billet oil take off plate for remote filter/cooler.
Rebuilt water pump with new bearing and seal. New pulley and fanbelt
Period 23D Lucas distributor with all new internals (bearing, shaft, weights etc)
with new 32 ounce points, new condense, new cap (old stock Lucas) new leads, plug caps and plugs.
New lightweight steel backplate to suit Midget gearbox. New rear seal carrier and new seal.
New lightweight steel flywheel fitted with new lightweight ringgear. New clutch assembly. All parts balanced individually by Swaymar.
Carburation - New fabricated large bore aluminium inlet manifolds with a pair of fully refurbished early DCOE 40 Weber carbs fitted with suitable chokes and jetting. Short bellmouths and some linkage.
Newly reconditioned dynamo with large diameter pulley on new mounting brackets and belt tensioner system.
All new high grade fixings wherever possible.
Exhaust manifold options to be discussed.
Please note - although this engine has been prepared to FIA legal race spec, the camshaft is sufficiently ‘soft’ as to allow usage as a road engine. It would be ideal for a Lotus 7, a Turner Climax, a TVR Grantura or a Fairthorpe. With appropriate backplate modifications it would also be suitable for a Lotus Elite (type 14) and some kit cars of the 1960s period.
