March F3 763-16
The Italian Formula Three series had emerged in the mid-1970s as perhaps the most important in the world alongside the main British championship. The Italian economy had proved more resilient than most others in the face of the economic downturn, and there was money to sponsor enough cars to make a very competitive streak. As a result, March sold eleven of its total production of 763 of sixteen cars in Italy. Competed in the period by “Gimax” (a mysterious but evidently wealthy Italian businessman who did not take himself too seriously), Alessandro Cinotti and Francesco Campaci, this March had a mixed success with some useful qualifying times but no races ended during his nine outing competitions, with budget pressures preventing him from undertaking more events. Such was the annual influx of new cars into Italy for the national series and the European title race that cars owned by the most prosperous teams, such as Pavanello, often had short racing lives. Unless they were adopted and modified by an impoverished privateer, the cars typically only ran for a season or two. This is the case of 763-16 which seems to have been abandoned in the Pavanello workshop in mid-1977 after only nine events. Long discovered and recently completely rebuilt by expert craftsmen in Italy, chassis # 16 completely restored Gigi Taverna’s aluminum panels, a rebuilt transmission and the engine was rebuilt by Ellegi Motori. # 16 has a continuous ownership chain from new, supported by CSAI documents from the mid 1980s onwards. He recently participated in the “Vernasca Silver Flag” and is accompanied by the following documents. The HTP FIA is form number I 7089 Period HR-1972-1976. Class F3 / 4 issued in 2008, the Italian Technical Passport n. 36335 issued by CSAI in 2010 and his original RAC certificate of origin issued in 1976.
