Crosslé 18F-70-03, Historic Formula 2 car
Historic F2 car with 1600cc BDA engine on period 48DCOE Weber carburettors/FT 200 gearbox, new FIA HTP papers expiring 30 December 2030. Eligible for Historic F2 Class A Jochen Rindt Trophy and Aurora Trophy series and race ready for the coming season. Last remaining car from three manufactured in 1970.
The Crosslé 18F was fitted with FVA engine in 1970’s, and had many great successes in Ireland, UK, Europe and USA in the hands of works driver Brian Nelson. For well documented history, see Crosslé history book, ‘Hidden Glory’, pages 195/202, and archive pages on Crosslé Car Company website.
18F 70 01: Competed actively in Ireland, UK and Europe, driver Brian Nelson. Rented to Tetsu Ikuzawa for Bogota Grand Prix F2 race, 14 February, 1971. Returned to Ireland for home 1971 season. Sold to Scotland late 1971 and last seen in May 1973.
18F 70 02: Formula B car for Crossle USA agent, Roger Barr. Driven to race win by Brian Nelson at Sebring late 1971. Last seen mid 1970s in mid west USA.
18F 70 03: Manufactured in 1970 as a factory spare, final built up not completed until 1992 by Crosslé Car Company to F2 specification for new owner Bill Gowdy. Raced by Gowdy in UK and Europe in 1992/95, placed 2nd in HSCC Championship in 1995. Sold in 1998 to TD Reid in Ireland upon Gowdy’s retirement from single seater racing. Last raced by Reid in June 2008 at Mondello Park 40th Anniversary meeting in Ireland. Comprehensive history file including old (1990’s) HSCC VIF and FIA HVIF forms.
Purchased by present owner some 5 years ago and fully recommissioned by Gerry Wainwright Motorsport. Engine rebuilt and dyno tested, gearbox rebuilt with new gears. Many new parts fitted while retaining essential period items. Excellent bodywork, Chevron centre/BBS split rims, 10 x 13 front, 14 x 13 rear with Avon slicks. Placed 8th overall and 1st in Class A of Derek Bell Trophy race 2 at Brands Hatch on 3 July 2016, fastest lap 1.31.69.
Pole position in qualifying and outright wins in both HSCC Historic F3/Classic Racing cars races at Croft, 6-7 August 2016.
Last raced in Derek Bell Trophy races at Legends of Brands Hatch meeting, 30 June - 1 July 2018, best recorded lap time of 1.31.845.
Engine run-time is 4hrs since rebuild. Recently fully checked over and fitted with latest spec SPA firex system, in date Schroth harness. A set of Dymag magnesium wheels (10 x 13 and 14 x 13) is included in the sale.
