EX Rob Walker Racing Team Lotus 49 R4
Lotus 49 R4 Ex Rob Walker Racing Team Car. Chassis No R4 was built by Team Lotus in 1967 and raced 01/01/1968 in South African GP Kyalami Circuit by Jim Clark. He had Pole Position, Firstest Lap and Won the race. This is his last Grand Prix Win. After the race, this car was sold to Privateer Team: Rob Walker Racing Team. Rob Walker prepared the car for Swiss Jo Siffert to participate Race of Champion on 17th of March 1968 at Brands Hatch. The car had accident in pre-practice and DNS the race. The car was sent back to Team’s Garage and subsequently destroyed by the fire.
01/07/1987, Rob Walker sanctioned his mechanic John Chisman to restore his Lotus 49. “” I would be very pleased if you would restore the Lotus 49 that was crashed at Brands Hatch and I give you my full authority to do everything to make it as an original Rob Walker Racing Team car as far as possible.”” Said in the letter from Rob Walker to John Chisman.
01/09/1987,Rob Walker sent a letter to Jim Chisman of the son of late John Chisman.”””This is just to confirm a letter I wrote to your father before he passed on. I told him that I was very happy for him to rebuilt the crashed Lotus 49 and that after it was done, he could sell it and keep the money for his retirement. As I told you I now suggest that you do this, keeping the car in the name of the Rob Walker Racing Team and when you have rebuilt it and sold it ,you share the profit with your mother. I am writing to Tom Wheatcroft to ask him to let you have the box of spares that was with the Lotus 49B which is up there and also to let you have the car for short time if you want to copy any special things. I have already spoken to Peter Warr and he says he will let you have any 49 spares that you want if they have them. If there is any further help, I can give you .
Unfortunately, Jim Chisman could not complete this project and sold it to Tom Wheatcroft of Donnington Park in 1990. In 1995 David McLaughlin bought this project from Tom. In 1997 Restoring R4 project began with new monocoque constructed by Hall & Fowler. New monocoque was built by copying R7 & R3 as pattern. R4 was completely rebuilt with early period type DFV engine and ZF 5 DS12 Gear Box with Rob Walker Racing Team Livery in 1998. Some period parts still owned by Rob Walker which was in box have been used to rebuilt part of this car.
08/02/1999, Rob Walker sent a letter to Alan Putt to apply HVIF. ””You will note from my copies of correspondence that it has always been my wish that my mechanic ,John Chisman, should restore the Lotus as a Rob Walker Racing Team car and on his untimely death, the project passed to his son.
I believe that there is a concept of continuous history which is the determining factor regarding Historic Cars these days and there can be no doubt whatsoever that this car has such an unbroken line. It has never disappeared from view, no one else but myself could claim the right to rebuild it and I am delighted that this project of almost thirty years has finally come to fruition.
It is my wish that the car continues to be entered in selected events as a Rob Walker Racing Team entry and believe it will be an interesting addition to the historic racing scene.
Alan Putt was a person who inspected rebuilt R4 and a signatory on FiA/MSA Historic Vehicle Identity Form No: 01/3067 issued on 04/12/2001. HVIF was issued with R4 in Rob Walker Racing Team livery.
Unfortunately, after the incident at Goodwood Revival 1999( R4 driven by Jackie Oliver collided with Jack Brabham's Mclaren M5A) R4 was repainted to Green Yellow Team Lotus livery. and appeared in many occasions with this livery afterward, probably with previous owner’s preference.
04/03/2008 HTP Paper was issued by MSA. Form No: GB6574 with Green/Yellow Livery.
This car advertising here is located in Japan since 10/06/2008. The car was completely dismantled and fully overhauled mechanically included ,ZF Gear BOX ,DFV suspensions part from Wiring,Fuel Cell,Fire-Distinguisher.Body was repainted, re-chromed by reputable racing mechanic used to work for Ron Dennis. Over 400 images are available if required. DFV engine was rebuilt by Tomei Engine which were main engine builder of DFV for F3000 Japanese championship races.
This car has been maintained with very best environment with present owner, only few times appeared in public as static display on prestigious event. Very little times of demonstration run for past 10 years. But need Fuel Cell, Fire distinguisher.
This car comes with few spare noses, set of spare wheels, few wind shields.
This car is entitled to have carry R4 chassis Number and Lotus badge on the nose.
I personally believe this car should be in Rob Walker Racing Team Livery.
Viewing by appointment only. Please remember the car is in Tokyo Japan. We will consider sensible offers.
