Volvo B10M 2 Car Race Transporter
Volvo B10M Race Transporter, newly refurbished Jonckheere Do not compare this to any other coach conversions out there.
Firstly we wanted a race transporter to carry 2 cars, after much research the latest coaches do not have the body height this Jonckheere has to enable to get 2 cars in. We were therefore faced with a challenge as these bodies were last built in the 80’s and despite there still been a few about they are usually rot boxes.
We completely stripped all panels off the coach, removed the insulation, removed the side doors at the rear, took the back off and took the ugly front off too. We fully stripped the dashboard and all interior out.
We then cut out all the rotten steel work out (which most coaches hide with a nice top panel) then replaced with new then treated all steel work to stop corrosion.
We extended the rear of the coach to the maximum length possible which is 12m
We fitted brand new Alcoa wheels with brand new tyres (done less that 2k)
We cut through then fabricated the rear workshop, angled the floor to ease loading and to stop grounding out of race cars.
We fabricated the top loading ramp and fitted 2 hydraulic rams that lift the 1st car to the desired height. This ramp can be stopped at any height and locks in position therefore can take various different sized race cars.
The rear workshop is fully cladded in Aluminum chequered plate, it has a basement locker that is full width, large tyre rack on the bottom level, 2 smaller tyre racks at the top, and space for more wheels under the bed on the top deck.
The workshop sizes are as follows lower level 15ft x 76' (opening to 91") Height 3'7" to 6'2"
Higher level 9ft x 6ft Height 4.5ft or higher depending on where the ramp is set. Possibility to extend this top level another 4'10"
We have fitted 3 quality winches, 1 to load / unload the top race car, another for the bottom and one that operates the rear door that stops on a pressure switch. The rear door has been made so it can remain level and we use this for car setups when off site.
All operations of the rear workshop are controlled by one remote control. This is particularly handy if loading on you own because you just sit in the race car and steer into the correct position.
Inside the workshop we have fitted a retractable 15m jet wash reel with lance that fits to the side and a 15m airline hose (compressor & jetwash fitted in lockers further forward)
We have fitted various wall mounted holders for cleaning products for the race cars, silicone guns, first aid and eye wash stations. We have also race suit hooks, 4 helmet carriers. All led lights have been fitted so working on your race car & loading / unloading can be done in pitch black (sort of usual time we turn up to a race meeting)
We sent the race transporter to a commercial garage and literally went through with a fine tooth comb. The chassis has been wax oiled, the brakes have been refurbished, the engine has been refreshed, the water system has been refurbished, the airbags have been replaced, the clutch, throttle linkage refurbished, absolutely way too much to list but the bill was about £20k. There are absolutely no mechanical issues with this vehicle and will come with a fresh 12 month test.
We fitted a new front to the coach in an attempt to make more pretty. The headlights are new and we have converted to the latest HID. The wiper motor, blades and linkages have also been refurbished.
The roof has had a full refurbishment and coated with a protective product. We have had a large Aluminum viewing platform fitted. Access to this platform is through the roof hatch in the living area. Erection of this platform take less than a minute. We also have a gazebo that fits to the rear of the platform, we usually use this in sunny or wet conditions.
To the top side of the coach is 5m remote controlled electric “free standing” awning which has a wind sensor and retracts if the wind gets up while away or asleep in the vehicle.
All new steel panels have been fitted to this coach, the paintwork is a gunmetal grey. Access panels have been made for the toilet and the fridge vents have been colour coded. Small windows have been fitted for the bunk beds to allow natural light, and all lockers have had new handles fitted which all lock.
This race transporter has enormous amounts of storage. The rear 2 lockers hold the generator, compressor, air conditioning unit, and battery power plant.
This race transporter habitation side runs off this battery power plant with the exception of the microwave air conditioning and heated towel rail in the bathroom.
The batteries are Trojan 225mA and consist of a bank of 6. These are very expensive to buy but they are simply the very best. You can run everything you need in the habitation area and never need to have the charger on.
There is a welder that runs off the 240v genset and to the outside of the rear locker is a 40” Tv on swivel bracket. This Tv is connected to the Sky Tv. Also in the rear locker is the outside sensor for the weather station that’s in the habitation area. There are out side LED lights in this locker too.
The centre lockers house the 800l fresh water tank, outside fridge and at the other side a cleaning station with sink, roll and soap dispenser.
The front lockers empty, there is a further locker that faces forward, this is where we stow the awning and chairs for the roof platform etc. We carry all our spares in boxes and this locker holds 24 of them.
All lockers are chequered plated and have led lights fitted.
In the drivers compartment, we have replaced all the old coach switches with fresh contemporary dials and gauges. The surround has been reupholstered with red and grey leather. A new drivers hold has been fitted, new steering wheel, new electric drivers seat upholstered in the same red & grey leather along with the crew seat. A marine control panel with usb has fitted, a tyre pressure and heat monitor for all 6 wheels, and a lcd head unit which controls the kenwood music system via Bluetooth. A rear camera has also been fitted with microphone.
Behind the drivers seat lives the telescopic ladder to access the roof platform. Behind the crew seat lives a fire extinguisher, weather station, home for the remote electric side awning, remote for the air conditioning, remote for front area heater. Above the crew seat houses the Sky Tv top box. We have had fitted an “in motion” sky dome (this means you can watch all your sky channels while the vehicle is in motion right through Europe). The 32” TV sits in the centre and can be easily locked away flat.
Further back is a 2 seater leather sofa at one side where the other occupies a larger rounded sofa which has a granite table fixed (but can be removed and stowed) below the sofas have storage and sockets that also have USB ports. All side windows have fitted pleated blinds and the windows have mirrored tint. Above the sofas we have full head lockers with reading lights, led strip lights and various other switches and controls.
The kitchen area has a 3 way fridge, gas hob, sink, microwave and granite worktops. There is plenty of storage with various lockers, cupboards and 3 large lockable drawers.
Blue led light are fitted to all bottom pelmets.
The floor is made out of Quickstep waterproof oak flooring
Through a lockable door is the changing and shower area. The oak floor continues to an electric flush toilet, step down shower cubical with toughened glass door, Bluetooth music bathroom mirror, vanity bowl with mixer tap onto granite tops. Plenty of storage area again. The hot water is supplied by an LPG gas boiler that’s located in the rear garage, hot water is intstent and constant. There is also a heated towel rail.
Through another lockable door and continued oak flooring is the bedroom area. There are 2 bunk beds that will sleep 4 adults all with their personal light and lcd tv. To the rear are the controls for the rear heating, then up a small ladder to a King sized bed with luxury memory foam mattress. Here we have a large skylight that can be blacked out, open or fly netted, there is a lcd tv/dvd wall mounted and rear storage lockers.
This Race transporter really has the best in quality. Viewing is essential. We have been using it for Autograss and carry a Class 7 in the bottom and a Class 8 at the top. But the garage area can easily be adapted to suit most race cars. We also tow a matching Brian James Race Sport trailer that carries 2 cars (available through separate negotiation)
The bus has no speed limiter and cruises between 60 & 70 mph but will go faster if need be. The habitation side is clean, fresh and warm. The mechanical side is 100% I have easily spent in the excess of £100k in this.... probably nearer £130k so at £80k you really are getting value for money. We wanted to build a coach into a Race Transporter because we feel they are better for viewing, more sociable and better for travelling.
