Description:
Lola Caterham SP300R
With less than a handful in the UK (including Caterham’s prototype) and only 25 ever made, this is an incredible opportunity to invest in a very rare sports prototype racing car.
Designed by Lola prior to the company’s bankruptcy, as you can imagine, the SP300R has a lot of Lola in it. The chassis is based on the aluminium monocoque found on the Lola B08/90 Sports 2000. Much work was completed on the aerodynamic development, using CFD techniques, and it takes clear styling cues from their race winning designed Lola Le Mans Prototype range, complete with double roll hoops and distinctive exhaust exits. The SP300R only weighs 545kg and generates 450kg of downforce at 155mph, creating genuine aerodynamic grip.
No expense was spared, with Caterham partnering with the likes of Pectel for the ECU, Faringdon for the custom steering wheel and Hewland for the Formula 3 gearbox. Power comes from a 2.0ltr Ford Duratec engine, which is fitted with a very reliable Rotrex Supercharger to give it some serious power and accelerating it to 60mph in approximately 2.6 seconds.
Caterham stated at the time that the engine produces 305bhp as standard and drives the rear wheels through Lola’s Formula 3 gearbox, complete with Hewland internals. This means that the rear end of the SP300R is almost identical to that which can be found on the Lola B05/30 F3 chassis, with the suspension pickups, uprights and damper layout all being shared. To further increase power, the SP300R is fitted with a ‘push to pass’ button on the Faringdon steering wheel, giving it an extra 30BHP on demand. Anecdotally, some SP300Rs have recorded nearer 375BHP with no upgrades.
This car has completed 4 track days and has only run for 50 minutes on track since its last full service/fluids/pads change, but has also been well looked after, with the engine being run every 2 months.
It comes with two sets of rims, over £5k worth of tyres (2 x sets brand new Pirelli slicks / 1 x set brand new Pirelli wets / 1 x set partially worn (50mins) Avon slicks / 1 x set worn Avon slicks / 1 x set Avon wets used for transporting), an air jack system and £10k worth or original spares, including two radiators, an intercooler and an oil cooler.
There is currently another SP300R advertised for sale in Europe at €120,000, so this represents a bargain by being able to invest in a rare piece of motorsport history for £89,995.
